How to Care for Acne-Prone Skin

Acne is often thought of as a teenage affliction, but it can persist well into your adult years as well. Plus, many people don’t even develop acne until they’re adults. Whatever your age is, there are some simple but effective skincare tips you can follow to reduce or prevent breakouts, and keep your skin looking and feeling beautiful.

Wash Your Face Twice a Day

Never go to bed without washing your face, because leaving your makeup on overnight can clog pores and cause acne and other skin problems. Plus, throughout the day your skin produces oil and collects dirt and oil that can seep into pores and cause more breakouts. Cleansing thoroughly at the end of the day removes these impurities and improves overall skin health.

Cleanse and Treat Your Skin at the Same Time

Your choice of cleanser can either worsen the problem or help prevent acne. Heavy or oily cleansers can make the situation worse, but those containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can treat existing pimples and prevent new ones from forming.

Be Gentle on Your Skin

You may be tempted to scrub your skin, use hot water, or use harsh products in an effort to eliminate or prevent acne. However, this will only irritate your skin and could actually trigger new breakouts. It can also cause scarring. Use only warm water and use your fingers to cleanse your face instead of using a cloth. You might use a very gentle natural Wild Oats Scrub by Mill Creek Botanicals to exfoliate your skin naturally with honey, comfrey, vitamin E and oats. The oats scrub will help remove dead skin cells and black heads.

Use Oil-Free Products

If your skin is oily, you may think you don’t need a moisturizer. You may also fear that it will make your breakouts worse or cause new ones. However, all skin types can benefit from moisturizer. Simply switch to an oil-free, lightweight formula, like Sleepy Hollow Oil-Free Facial Cream, to keep your skin hydrated without clogging pores or aggravating your acne. Similarly, only use oil-free face makeup such as foundations and powders. You may want full coverage to hide pimples and acne scars, but heavy makeup can clog your pores. This, in turn, can trigger even more breakouts.

At Beauty Universe, we offer an oil-free hair and skin care line called Sleepy Hollow by Mill Creek Botanicals. It consists of lightweight, non-greasy skincare products that cleanse your skin thoroughly but won’t irritate your skin, clog your pores, or exacerbate acne-prone skin.
