Men’s Guide to Skincare

If you walk down the skincare aisle in any supermarket, drugstore or department store, you’ll likely see dozens of skincare products designed and marketed specifically for women. While women typically have more sensitive skin and it requires a more intensive skincare routine, men need to take care of their skin as well. Read on to learn more about the best ways for men to care for their skin.

To start off with, you need to determine what your skin type is — oily, dry, or combination. You’ll need to use different formulations of skincare products depending on what type of skin you have. For example, if you have oily skin, you should use lightweight products that won’t clog pores. Signs that you have oily skin include large pores that are often clogged, an oily or shiny appearance, frequent acne breakouts, and blackheads or white bumps on the skin. Dry skin is typically characterized by a rough, scaly or flaky appearance, as well as redness. It may also be prone to chapping and irritation. People with dry skin often have very small pores. Combination skin is the most common type, and features areas of oily skin as well as dry skin.

Your choice of cleanser can make a big difference in the health and appearance of your skin. While many men opt for bar soaps, these can dry out your skin more than liquid soap, which is often gentler and more moisturizing. If you have very dry skin, consider using a moisturizing cleanser to keep skin hydrated and smooth.

Also, men may not think to moisturize their skin after washing, but it’s just as important for them as it is for women. Apply moisturizer immediately after washing your face to lock in moisture, and choose a formula that best suits your skin type. For example, if you have dry skin, choose a thick moisturizer such as a cream formulation. If you have normal skin, however, you don’t need something quite so thick and will instead probably do better with something more lightweight such as a lotion. Mill Creek Botanicals Aloe Vera Gel 99% will do a trick. It is concentrated non-greasy moisturizer with anesthetic, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties. Great to use as an aftershave. If you have oily skin, you want something that won’t clog your pores or trigger breakouts, so a gel often works best. Alternatively, you can use a toner, which also promotes moisture but isn’t greasy or oily. Sunscreen is also important, and you can use a moisturizer with sunscreen for convenience, or use a separate sunscreen. You need a minimum of an SPF 15, but if you plan to spend an extended period outdoors, opt for something higher such as an SPF 30.
