Spring is finally here, and with summer quickly approaching you’re probably thinking about spending more time outdoors. If you do, it’s crucial that you wear sunscreen at all times, because the sun can not only cause sunburn, it can also contribute to the risk of developing skin cancer, as well as speed up the signs of aging. But how much sunscreen do you really need? Is it sufficient to put some on before you go out, or do you need to reapply it during the day? How high an SPF do you need to be protected? And, is the sunscreen included in many cosmetic and skincare products enough, or do you need to use a separate sunscreen? Read on for the answers to these questions and more.
You can get pretty much any level of SPF, which refers to the amount of sun protection contained in a sunscreen or other product. There are several as high as 50+, but is that really necessary? Most experts agree that an SPF this high offers only minimally higher protection than lower SPF levels. It’s generally agreed that you need at least an SPF of 15, but if you plan to spend significant time outside, opt for at least an SPF of 30. You can go higher if you want, but you probably won’t benefit much from it, and it likely won’t be worth the extra cost, which can be considerable.
Also, apply it liberally — ideally, about 2 tbsp. worth for exposed areas such as the face and hands. Many people use only a thin coat, which dramatically reduces how well it protects you. So don’t scrimp, and apply it generously instead. If you’re spending time outdoors, especially if you’re swimming or sweating, apply sunscreen every 2 hours for continuous protection.
