If you’ve ever struggled to find beauty and skincare products that work for you, you might not be using the formula that’s best suited to your skin type. That’s because not everyone has the same skin type, and what works well for one person may be too harsh for another person or may not work at all. That’s why it’s crucial that you identify your skin type before purchasing any kind of beauty product, as everything from what type of cleanser you should use to the best type of foundation will vary based on if you have normal, oily, combination or dry/sensitive skin. Read on to learn more about the various skin types and how to determine yours.
Several factors influence what type of skin you have. This includes how much water and/or oil content your skin has, in addition to how sensitive it is to chemicals, the environment and other external factors. Plus, your skin type can change over time, with many people finding that their skin is more likely to be dry as they age. Even if you had normal or very oily skin when you were young, you may find that as you mature, your skin is increasingly dry and also much more sensitive.
The following are the main skin types:
Normal Skin
If you have normal skin, consider yourself lucky, because this skin type is neither too oily nor too dry, making it easier to find products that will work. Normal skin tends to have few blemishes or imperfections, along with small pores and a radiant glow. It’s also typically not severely sensitive to chemicals, temperature or anything else that can cause stress on skin.
Combination Skin
This skin type has both oily and normal or dry areas. It’s usually the T-zone that’s oily — this is the area of the face that includes the nose, forehead and chin. People with combination skin are also more prone to blackheads and enlarged pores, and their skin may often look shiny or oily.
Dry Skin
People with dry skin may have very small pores that are barely visible, along with dull, rough patches of skin. Dry skin also tends to have less elasticity than other skin types, and may have more obvious lines and wrinkles, in addition to redness.
Oily Skin
Oily skin often has a noticeable shine, along with very large pores and blackheads. People with oily skin also tend to be prone to acne and breakouts, and may have difficulty keeping acne and blemishes under control.
